CALIFORNIA DREAMING IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA
One of the greatest compliments we can receive as interior designers is a referral from someone who knows us well. It’s one thing for someone to admire your work, but it’s another thing entirely for them to share your name with a close friend, family member, or neighbor and say, “You should call them.”
That’s how this project began. A dear partner in our professional network connected us with one of his best friends from high school, who was relocating from California to Northern Virginia with his young family. They were starting a new chapter, and we were honored to help them feel more settled in their new home.
Our goal for this project was a "West Coast meets East Coast vibe." The clients’ wish list included creating personal spaces with warm wood accents, modern furnishings, sofas to lounge on and handmade rugs. One of the reasons they moved east was to be closer to their extended family. They wanted a welcoming home for hosting holidays that included gathering spaces that could seat everyone.
FOYER
A thoughtfully designed foyer helps guests feel welcome and serves as a reminder that small spaces can make a big first impression.
We updated this long hallway with an oversized cabinet providing a large surface area for meaningful mementos that can evolve with the seasons, while the clutter stays hidden away inside. We balanced it with a large mirror and dramatic light fixture. A gorgeous hand knotted runner completes the warm welcome.
DINING ROOM
A moody, medium blue (Benjamin Moore's Normandy 2129-40, to be exact) sets the tone for this open plan dining room. We wanted a modern, solid wood dining table and this Made in the USA beauty was the perfect fit – with its leaves in place, it sits up to ten. Leather dining chairs, a stylish brass lighting fixture, and serene coastal artwork add to the casual vibe.
FAMILY ROOM
We designed the Family Room around the existing stone fireplace to create a relaxed hangout space for the whole family.
Soft upholstery, warm wood accents, and a mix of earthy pillows help the space feel casual without losing its polish. The modern, metal coffee table is perfect for puzzles, after-school lounging or pizza slices during Friday movie nights. We also like adding extra ottomans for back-up seating or simply putting your feet up.
The blue leather lounge chair creates a perfect perch for reading, relaxing, or claiming a few peaceful minutes before the rest of the house catches up. Pull up an ottoman and stay awhile!
POWDER ROOM
Even tiny rooms can have big personalities! This playful powder room wallpaper brings charm, color, and a touch of surprise to a small space.
PRIMARY BEDROOM
Our goal for the primary bedroom was to balance softness and structure in a way that felt both elevated and soothing. An oversized, sculptural light fixture draws the eye up to enjoy the details of the tray ceiling.
The sitting area at the foot of the bed features chunky bouclé swivel chairs and a large leather ottoman. It makes a great TV viewing area instead of watching TV from the bed.
We loved working with these fabulous clients. Every time we visited, we’d get smiles and hugs from the kids. We’re grateful for the chance to create meaningful spaces that make them feel at home.
