5 WAYS TO TRANSFORM A ROOM WITH COLOR
Fall is officially here my friends, bringing with it all the rich, beautiful colors of the season. And just as color transforms the landscape outside, it can do the same inside your home. It can make a room feel cheerful and energetic, calm and relaxing, or add just enough drama to keep things interesting.
The trick is figuring out which colors you love and how much of them you actually want to live with. We love using blues and greens to create a sense of calm and saving stronger colors like red, orange and yellow for accents, where they can make an impact without overwhelming the room.
Read on for five simple ways to use color to make a big impact in your home.
1.) FLOORS ARE YOUR FOUNDATION
When designing a room, we often start with the rug to set the tone for the entire space. It’s an easy way to bring in color, pattern, and personality without making a major commitment. In this Dining Room project (pictured below), the luscious patterned handmade carpet adds movement and a mix of cool and warm tones giving the room personality while still allowing the furniture and window treatments to stand out.
Our recommendation is to have a pattern and mix of shades on the floor so the carpet is not a solid color – which can get a bit boring. Also, a variation of shade makes it harder to see direct and pet hair.
2.) HAVE SEAT ON A COLORFUL PIECE
Furniture is a great place to have a little more fun with color. In this space, the citron chair becomes a focal point, adding brightness against the cooler blues of the drapery and the neutrals around it. Used as an accent, it adds plenty of personality without overwhelming the space.
You don’t always have to go bold with color. Sometimes the softer color choices are the ones that make a room feel the most inviting. In this Primary Bedroom sitting area, the olive green chairs bring in a soft, organic note that complements the neutral drapery and lighter furnishings, giving the space a relaxed, inviting feel.
3.) TURN YOUR WALLS UP A NOTCH
If you want to add color with a little extra interest, wallpaper is a great place to start. We especially love grasscloth for the texture it brings along with the color. This blue grasscloth adds richness and a little drama to this traditional Dining Room, without making the space feel heavy.
A Powder Room is one of those spaces where you can have a little more fun with color and pattern. We loved this paper’s cloud-like feel and how it tied in perfectly with the teal accents throughout this beach home project.
4.) TAKE A PEEK AT YOUR WINDOWS
Window treatments are a fun way to bring in both color and pattern without overwhelming a room. Here, the floral Roman shade brings in shades of blue and ties in beautifully with the pillows and the custom-made bench cushion, giving this landing spot at the end of the hallway a more finished look.
Solid-color drapery can make a strong statement, especially in a rich, saturated shade. In this sitting area, the deep blue panels frame the windows beautifully and create a polished and elegant backdrop for the patterned chairs.
5.) GET CREATIVE WITH PAINT
One of our favorite ways to transform a space with paint is to look beyond the walls. Here, the soft blue ceiling adds just enough color to make the architectural detail stand out without overwhelming the room. It creates a quiet focal point and ties in beautifully with the artwork and other cool tones throughout the space.
A bold wall color can completely change the mood of a room in the best way. This deep teal gives the room instant character and creates a striking backdrop for the artwork and warm accents, without making the space feel heavy.
You don’t need to completely redo a room to make an impact with color. A rug, a chair, a painted ceiling, or a patterned shade can be enough to give a space a whole new feel. The key is choosing colors you love and using them in a way that feels natural to you.
