FOUR FRESH IDEAS FOR FORGOTTEN SPACES

Most homes have a forgotten spot or two that just never quite found its purpose. People in the design biz call it “dead space” and it could be an awkward nook, a shallow alcove or a niche that feels too small to matter. Well, my stylish friend, all spaces matter! Your home's square footage is simply too precious to leave any space underutilized.

We like to think of dead spaces as design opportunities that are just waiting to happen. Instead of letting those empty areas detract from a room’s flow, we love turning them into purposeful, beautiful additions that enhance how the space looks and how it works for everyday life.

We’ve collected four examples of overlooked spaces that we’ve transformed for our clients into beautiful, functional and fun features.

1.) THE ULTIMATE TEEN HANGOUT

Our clients had an expansive third level that needed to be turned into functional space. We envisioned a large bonus room designed for their daughters for gaming, movie nights, sleepovers and after school hangouts.

The roof line created an interesting niche that we discovered could perfectly fit a Queen size mattress. We created a bench and then sunk the mattress into it. We also built a sectional sofa that hugged the corner of the room and covered it with custom made cushions. Visit our Portfolio for more photos from this project.

2.) CREATIVE CORNER SOLUTION

Here’s another creative use of space for the above Teen Lounge area. The client’s architect had a closet in mind for this awkward corner, but we envisioned this stylish snack & beverage station. A perfect complement for the new hangout space. Poppi anyone?

3.) COZY SITTING AREA

An empty space at the end of a long hallway provided an opportunity to create a lovely focal point. We designed this window seat with decorative Roman shades, sconces, a comfy over-sized cushion and added an underneath storage area. Now this formerly blank space is both beautiful and functional!

4.) SECRET BOOKCASE

Our clients’ Primary Bedroom originally had an doorway that led to an outdoor deck, but we didn’t want a secondary hallway off the bedroom. We decided to disguise it with a beautiful custom bookcase that OPENS to reveal a secret passage to the deck. (But don’t tell anyone.)

No space is too small or too awkward to make an impact. With smart design and a creative approach, even the quietest corners can shine.

These creative solutions are one of the many reasons to have a strong design team involved with your remodeling projects. We create the inspiration and design and work with our talented trades (or yours) to make these creative ideas come to life for homes in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland and in vacation homes everywhere.

Here’s to making every inch of your home feel intentional, beautiful, and uniquely yours.
